About Veritas System Recovery 18 and Windows Server Core

Last published : Apr 02, 2026
Windows Server Core does not include the traditional graphical user interface (GUI) that is available with other versions of Windows. It is installed and managed primarily using commands at the command line interface.
Although Veritas System Recovery 18 can be installed on Windows Server Core, it is an agent only install. Windows Server Core does not support Microsoft .NET. Therefore, the Veritas System Recovery GUI cannot be installed. Veritas System Recovery is supported on Windows Server Core by a headless agent only. You can install Veritas System Recovery 18 using commands at the command line. You can also install (push) the agent from a remote machine.
One-to-one management is the only supported method for backing up and restoring a Windows Server Core computer. This means, after you install the agent on a Windows Server Core computer, connect to it from a remote machine running one of the following:
  • Veritas System Recovery 18
  • Veritas System Recovery 18 Management Solution
Before installing the agent remotely on a Windows Server Core computer, you must configure the firewall to allow access to the server. By default, the firewall is configured to allow no access to the server.
For more information on configuring the firewall on a Windows Server Core computer, see the Microsoft website.
Windows-on-Windows 64-bit (WoW64) is a subsystem of the Windows operating system and is required for running 32-bit applications on 64-bit versions of Windows. It is installed by default and is included on all 64-bit versions of Windows. If you have uninstalled WoW64 on a Windows Server Core computer, you must reinstall it before installing Veritas System Recovery 18.
